Approximately 7% of women that carry a pregnancy to term develop Gestational Diabetes during pregnancy. The incidence of Gestational Diabetes doubled from 1992 to 2004. No one understands why this has occurred except that the incidence of obesity increased tremendously during this same period of time. Type II diabetes has a incidence of developing between 15 to 60 percent 5 to 15 years after patients have had gestational diabetes. The three risk factors that indicate who will develop Type II diabetes are 1) BMI >27, 2) developing gestational diabetes before 24 weeks gestation, and 3) the use of insulin or not during pregnancy.
Sugars not controlled during pregnancy can lead to fetal abnormalities, fetal macrosomia (large fetus), hypoglycemia (low blood sugars), hyperbilirubinemia (elevated bilirubin) which can cause damage to the infant’s brain, and pulmonary ( lung) immaturity. These problems are reduced tremendously when blood sugars are kept under control.
Normally the way sugars are kept under control are diet, exercise, insulin, and glyburide. There are other alternative treatments that show promise and have minimal side effects:
1) Cinnamon
2) Chromium Piccolinate
3) Bitter Melon
4) Cane Sugar
5) Alpha Lipoic Acid Read more...

Pregnancy nowadays is safer and less life threatening than what it was ages ago when doctors would use crude methods. Modern technology has made delivery less painful unlike in the past wherein a woman is almost wading in her own blood during a delivery, seriously imperiling her life or that of the baby.
Through a C-section or a cesarean section, mothers are given the choice as to the kind of delivery they would like to have for their baby. This is a huge departure from normal or vaginal delivery wherein a mother has to wait for labor to finally deliver her child.
Choosing Between C-section and Normal Delivery
Batting for C-section Delivery:
Today, there is a raging debate as to which method of delivering a baby is better. Is it going to be a C-section or normal delivery? Before expounding on the merits of both, let’s first have a look at the reasons why a C-section delivery is done:
1) To make delivery easier, especially if the baby’s size is deemed too big to pass through a woman’s vagina
2) To abort a dangerous pregnancy, which may mean putting both the mother and her child at an extremely risky situation and could imperil their lives Read more...

The largest national health crisis that Americans will be facing in the near future is the rising number of obese and morbidly obese people that live in America. The current metric to measure obesity is the Body Mass Index or BMI. A person can determine their BMI looking at a BMI chart with their height and weight. The BMI numbers range in four categories: Underweight =<18.5, Normal weight = 18.5-24.9, Overweight = 25-29.9, and Obesity = 30 or greater.
63% of Americans are overweight with a BMI score over 25. 31% of Americans are obese with a BMI over 30. 3.8 million Americans are over 300 pounds, a large majority of those being male. The average female in the United States weighs 163 pounds, and the average height of a female in the US is 5′3″. These numbers means that the average American female is overweight with a BMI of 28.9. Another disturbing trend in the US is the number of obese children. Childhood obesity has tripled in the past two decades. Medical research has established that being obese increases the chance of Americans contracting cancer, diabetes, having heart attacks and strokes, and many other deadly disorders. Read more...

Gastric Sleeve surgery is a relatively new weight loss surgery also technically known as gastric sleeve resection, sleeve gastrectomy or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. It is a part of the duodenal operation and involves removing the 2/3rds of the lateral side of the stomach with a stapler-like device. It is also a keyhole surgery but is not reversible. It basically transforms a stomach sack into a stomach sack.
The gastric sleeve surgery is a restrictive type of bariatric procedure that reduces the size of the stomach permanently by restricting intake of food. The surgery is usually performed as the first part of a 2 stage surgery. The second part of the surgery usually performed at a later stage involves duodenal switch surgery or gastric bypass. The purpose of the two part surgery is to make the procedure safer and less risky for patients with a BMI of over 60 or those with complex medical conditions. Read more...

Recent studies have shown that cinnamon is more than an everyday spice. Aside from being the best condiment to sprinkle to your morning coffee and holiday cookies, cinnamon’s health value is as precious as gold. It has been discovered that cinnamon is a help for insulin resistance and weight loss, among its many other health benefits.
A reputable diabetes journal recently published that cinnamon has the innate ability to reduce the body’s blood sugar level, while increasing insulin production. When taken by a diabetics on a regular basis, it can definitely help manage the disease.
How Cinnamon Helps Fight Diabetes
Cinnamon has insulin-like properties, said the researchers at University of South Carolina Beaufort. The spice is so powerful that it can actually be used as a cheaper substitute for insulin. It is most effective for people suffering from type II diabetes. Cinnamon contains bio-active components that can even prevent the onset of this disease.
In the study printed in the Diabetes Care journal, 60 diabetic men and women taking diabetes medications were put in a clinical test. Some are asked to continue with their medications, while others are placed on a placebo. And there are those who were given cassia cinnamon in different dosages for forty days. Read more...

Your yard and garden are things people take close notice of when they visit your home and they say a lot about you as an individual. This can really help to make your garden a visual delight for you and your guests. Plus they have many very practical uses.
One of the best uses is as a boarder for your flower beds. Garden paving slabs can be cut to fit any area you need them to fit. The premade slabs come precut so all you have to do is place them where you need them. Having these around your flower beds can let people know where your flowers are and help to prevent them being stepped on or even mowed over.
These can also be used as walkways so less dirt or mud is tacked in your house by you and your guests after walking around and looking at all of your flowers. They add detail to your yard or garden and help in so many ways that they are virtually a must have.
If you are a do it yourself kind of person then you have two options. You can get the concrete and make forms for them or you can buy premade slabs. The premade slabs are by far the easiest and probably best way to go. Read more...

Prior to a decade ago, it was rare for medical personnel to perform abortions on patients 6 weeks or less. Reasons for this are the increased chance of retained (left behind) tissue because the pregnancy sac was so small it was easier to miss. This can lead to uterine infection, and heavy vaginal bleeding. There are times when the entire pregnancy is missed when there is the attempt to perform surgical procedures on patients that are less than 6 weeks from their last period. Other complications that occur are a higher risk for cervical (lower womb) tears, difficult dilation (opening) of the cervix, and uterine perforation (a hole or tear) which can lead to infection, bleeding, hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus, or even death of the patient.
