Nasal polyps are small, soft, jelly-like nodules within the nasal passageways. Small nasal polyps pose no problems, but large ones may cause a blockage that can obstruct breathing.
Knowing the early warning signs can help you get diagnosed and treated immediately. Here are 7 symptoms or warning signs that you have nasal polyps. If you experience them, inform your doctor (an ears, nose and throat or ENT specialist) as soon as possible. He can perform tests and detect your problem right away.
1. Mouth breathing – Any obstruction of the nasal passageways can force you to breathe through your mouth. However, if mouth breathing has become chronic, or if it is not related to a cold, nasal polyps may be causing this.
2. Runny nose – A runny nose with no other associated symptoms may be caused by nasal polyps as well. Allergies can cause a runny nose, but they may also cause enlargement of present polyps. This makes symptoms more noticeable.
3. Persistent stuffiness – If you have a stuffy feeling in your nose, nasal polyps may be causing this problem. It can cause your passageways to be blocked, affecting one or both nostrils. Read more...

Sleep apnea is often confused with typical snoring. However, this is far from the case in reality. It is actually an entirely different disease that has far more devastating health affects and various consequences that affect your daily life.
So you may now be asking yourself what is this sleep apnea exactly? This is a relatively simple question. There are several causes of this disease but the end result is all the same. Sleep apnea will cause intense snoring that is interrupted by brief periods in which the person literally stops breathing. This is not normal and you should be thoroughly aware of anyone you are sleeping next to at any point in time to inform them of this. This is another serious issue because the disorder occurs during sleep only it is often difficult to diagnose.
The person will also begin to snore suddenly and loudly after these fifteen seconds are up. This is because the person will be gasping for air due to their significant loss of air. Often times they can even startle themselves out of sleep when this happens. Read more...

If you are a sufferer of a sleep disorder such as snoring or sleep apnea, then you are likely aware of the wide range of snore aids that offer to ease your condition. A lot of these are really good and work nicely, some leave a lot to be desired. As a person who snored heavily for most of my adult life, I found a massive amount of relief with a product known as an anti snoring pillow.
For the low price these snore pillows cost, they offer rapid relief from a long term problem. If you have the same affliction as a large number of the snorers in the world, laying on your back probably brings on your snoring more than any other position. If this is the case, you can be thankful. It allows a simple adaptation of your sleeping position to afford rapid relief.
Snore pillows are constructed of a special type of foam that will retain it,s shape well. If fits the contours of your head, neck and shoulders, and reduces the likelihood of you rolling onto your back at night.
In addition, it pulls the lower jaw into a slightly forward position and elongates your neck a little, thus assisting in keeping the airway clear at night. Read more...

Glue ear is a condition wherein fluid accumulates in the middle ear, just behind the eardrum. It is the most common reason of partial deafness in children. About one out of four children get affected by glue ear at some stage of their childhood. Boys are at higher risk of this disease, being the most affected between ages 2 to 5. Even so, there are still risks it can occur at later stages, including adulthood.
Glue ear, unfortunately, sometimes goes unnoticed. There are a few warning signs however, like having a stuffy feeling in the ears, and temporary hearing loss.
Glue ear is a very common disease. One episode predicts another. It has been known that children who have had one episode of glue ear are more likely to have recurrent episodes.
Other risk factors that may contribute to higher risk of glue ear are:
- living in a home where people smoke
- often having cough and cold
- having a family history of glue ears; and
- as a baby, he or she was bottle fed rather than breast fed Read more...

The ears, nose and throat are three organs that perform some of the most vital bodily functions. Hence, visiting your ear, nose and throat physician is very important. These organs are known to be “mutually exclusive” and are responsible for many bodily functions. Smelling, swallowing, eating, speaking, hearing, and even body balancing are tasks that require healthy ears, nose and throat.
The ears, nose and throat are three different, individual organs with different uses. However, even just a slight problem in one of them can be quite unsettling to the other two. That is where your ear, nose and throat (or ENT) specialists come in. These experts can identify your problem and give you whatever solution you many need in order to feel better.
If problems like hearing loss, ear infections or other ear problems bother you, your ENT specialist can usually diagnose the problem easily. Same goes for problems with the nose, such as sinusitis, nasal polyps and difficulty breathing or smelling. The throat may also pose problems such as tonsillitis and even breathing problems, and the ENT specialist is the best possible expert out there to help figure out these dilemmas. Read more...

Tonsillitis means inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils. Simply put, it just means your tonsils are swollen. The swelling or inflammation may also include other areas of the back of the throat, such as the lingual tonsils and the adenoids. The tonsils are lymph nodes (oval shaped masses of lymph gland tissue) located on both sides of the throat. Tonsillitis refers to the infection of these tonsils.
Usual characteristics or symptoms of tonsillitis involve pain in the throat and trouble swallowing. It can be diagnosed only by checking the tonsils with a tongue depressor and spatula, used in collecting a sample.
The sample taken from the tonsils will determine whether the infection is bacterial or viral. Streptococcus is the most common type of bacteria that causes tonsillitis. An example of a viral illness that can cause tonsillitis is glandular fever, but it can be caused by other viral infections as well. Examples of viral causes are herpes simplex virus, the measles virus, adenovirus, cytomegalovirus, Streptococcus pyogenes (GABHS) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
Bacterial infections will require antibiotics, while viral infections won’t respond to it. Read more...

Most people make some snoring noses while they are asleep and this is perfectly normal. The problem does need to be addressed if the snoring is loud and goes all night. If the tossing and turning, as well as the snoring keeps your partner awake during the night, something needs to be done. There are a range of snoring devices and snoring aids that can help you fix the problem.
Many people use snoring aids and devices to great effect. An anti-snore chin strap, which is a simple harness that goes over the head and around your chin, holds the jaw closed during the night. This encourages you to breathe naturally through your nose whilst sleeping. For many people, this eliminates the snoring and leaves you making only natural sleeping noises.
You must not use one of these if you suffer from sleep apnea, this can be seriously dangerous to your health and life. If for some reason you stop breathing late at night because of the apnea it is possible that you cannot remove the mask on time to open your mouth and breathe. This may cause you to pass out and die because you are not getting enough air. Read more...

Can a snoring mouth guard of some description really be useful to help stop snoring? And what is the best stop snoring device?
Well, the answer to the first question is a definite yes. Devices designed for the aid of sleep apnea and snoring, sometimes known as dental appliances, are indeed, very effective remedies for many snorers. These devices are extremely useful for those that suffer from mild sleep apnea. The method they use to achieve these results is simple. They prevent the soft tissues of the throat from collapsing when you fall asleep. It is these vibrating tissues that block the airway and cause that snoring sound.
These type of mouth guards are often called mandibular advancement devices. They are worn in the mouth whilst you sleep and position the lower jaw in a position that keeps the airway clear, and can also lift the soft palate somewhat. These great devices keep the throat clear of blockage, and you stop snoring. They prove themselves exceptionally effective for such a low cost aid. Read more...

The most anti-social expression your face can make is scowling, and that is exactly what you present when you have sinusitis. Imagine glowering for no emotional reason in the least. You’re not feeling upset or bothered, but somehow your face shows that you are. Imagine meeting someone new for the first time with a frowning face. It is, indeed, not a truly welcoming sign of a fresh friendship.
You just can’t help but frown with sinusitis because of the spasm it brings over the bridge of your nose. Other people around you may not understand it, except you take the pains of excusing your condition to each and everyone you come across with. It’s not a very funny scenario if you’re the one bearing it.
It’s not just the frown that repels people when you have sinusitis. It’s also really painful. You can feel common symptoms like sneezing and coughing, stuffy and runny nose, clear and thin discharge or thick nose discharge, headache, and facial spasm.
You’re familiar with the pain when you have sinusitis. But those with the recurring type, you might be already accustomed to the pain and it’s just a discomfort for you rather than a pain. Read more...
