In these tough economic times, it is of great concern to public health officials that more and more individuals appear to be resorting to vitamin pills and protein shakes in order to save money, as real whole food is costly. Nevertheless, pills and powders aren’t a great source of nutrition, even though they’re being used as meal replacements instead of the simple dietary supplements they are at best.
The dangerous nature of this gambit, where financially desperate folks decide to cut back on food to be able to pay the rent, is magnified by the fact that one doesn’t even really know what, exactly, is in the vitamin pill or protein powder.
Under current law, so-called dietary supplements, also known as nutritional supplements, don’t fall under the regulation of the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and therefore can contain almost anything, despite the marketing hype on the label. Indeed, even those products under FDA oversight, for instance canned foods and baked goods, don’t always contain the nutrients claimed. Read more...

It’s easy to see that too much sugar is causing our world a fair amount of grief. With the wide variety of sugar substitutes many are choosing to reduce their sugar intake or eliminate it completely. The hard part is finding a sugar substitute that will work for you. There are natural sweeteners and synthetic sweeteners. Some cause side effects such as tooth decay, headaches or digestion problems. In this article you’ll find a few quick things to keep in mind while trying to find the right fit.
The first thing to consider is artificial versus all natural sweeteners. With the ability of man to engineer very complex things these days it is no wonder we have available several chemicals that work to sweeten drinks and foods but not provide calories or other side effects the chemical was engineered to avoid. There are also various other natural sweeteners that mother nature has invented for us that add wonderful flavor to the foods we eat and drink.
